The Norwich Community Cinema will be showing MELANCHOLIA, a psychological disaster film from director/provocateur Lars von Trier. You may have read about the Danish filmmaker over the years, but if you have not seen any of his films, you are in for a treat with this approachable feature.

In this hauntingly beautiful movie, Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgård) are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of her sister Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg), and brother-in-law John (Kiefer Sutherland). Despite Claire’s best efforts, the wedding is a fiasco, with family tensions mounting and relationships fraying. Meanwhile, a rogue planet called Melancholia is heading directly towards Earth.

One should know that although the film is about depression, it is anything but depressing and affords Kirsten Dunst a vehicle for an award winning (Best Actress Cannes Film Festival) performance including screwball comedy (she shows up for the wedding in a manic state.) This unlikely subject becomes dazzling in the hands of Mr. von Trier.

The National Society of Film Critics, an influential group of 58 journalists in the US, was the first group of critics to name director Lars von Trier's apocalyptic drama Melancholia the Best Picture of the Year for its 46th annual awards on January 7. Kirsten Dunst was selected for Best Actress.  The film is also the frontrunner for this year’s Bodil Awards, Denmark’s leading film honor, with six nominations, including best film. The end of the world never looked so good.

Melancholia will be screened on Saturday, January 14 at the Donald L. Oat Theater, 60 Broadway, Norwich along with the short film, Brink.  www.norwichcinema.org.
