The Joe Carter Samba Rio Trio performs a Brazilian Jazz concert at the Trumbull Library’s Community Room. The trio is comprised of Joe Carter (from Trumbull, CT) – violao (classical nylon string guitar); Leco Reis (from Rio Grande do Sol, Brasil) – baixo (acoustic bass), and Nanny Assis (from Bahia, Brasil) – percussao (Afro-brasilian percussion). This international trio is well versed in the various Brazilian styles of music: Samba, Bossa Nova, Baiao, Choro. By combining this music with straight-ahead Hard Bop Jazz the trio creates a style known as Brazilian Jazz. Think: “Jobim meets Coltrane”. The trio’s repertoire is a combination of original tunes and songs by some of Brazil’s classic composers such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Ary Barroso, Baden Powell, Noel Rosa, Dorival Caymmi, Pixinguinha and others. By adding the improvisational aspect of North American Jazz to the mixture the group creates a sound that is truly international and one that has entertained appreciative audiences on four continents. Highlights have included concerts and club appearances in Paris, Bombay, Corsica, Stuttgart and Rio de Janeiro.
