Culture Connect Featured Event
Homegrown Dance is a collective of professional companies that regularly present work at Charter Oak Cultural Center, the primary stage for dance in Hartford. The collective was formed last year to increase the visibility of dance in the region’s cultural landscape and to stake new supports to encourage its growth.
The evening features tantalizing previews of works-in-progress to repertory excerpts in distinctive kinesthetic flavors from five companies: Dance Connect performs a sampling from “Sirena,” inspired by choreographer Chloe Carlson's lifelong love and experience of the sea. dancEnlight shows excerpts from “The Way,” steeped in choreographer Lorelei Chang’s knowledge of Chinese dance, martial arts and calligraphy. Judy Dworin Performance Project presents a preview excerpt from “Meditations from a Garden Seat,” which explores how gardens found in unexpected places can be sources of regeneration and healing. Scapegoat Garden performs two duets from a work-in-process titled “Relentless,” choreographer Deborah Goffe’s investigation into the seemingly simple notion that practice makes perfect. Spectrum in Motion Dance Theater Ensemble offers Olivia Davis’s “Turo-Turo.” Meaning “point-point” in Tagalog, the title refers to Filipino buffet restaurants where diners may sample any number of dishes, indicating their choices to the server by pointing to the items.
A talk with the artistic directors follows the performance.
