Celebrate the Fourth of July at the home of a man called “Mr. Fourth of July” for his patriotism and close ties to several U.S. presidents. Historic flags used by Henry Bowen during his July 4 celebrations (1870-1895), including a 29-foot flag flown for the 1889 visit by President Benjamin Harrison, are on display. Ulysses S. Grant makes a special appearance. Family activities are offered, including period children’s games, word puzzles, and art projects.
Roseland Cottage museum (1846) has survived virtually unchanged, with its original Gothic furniture, embossed Lincrusta Walton wall coverings, and coral-pink exterior. The museum complex also includes a formal parterre garden, icehouse, privy, garden house, and indoor bowling alley. The museum and gift shop are open from Wednesday to Sunday, June 1 through October 15. Guided tours of the house museum are from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., on the hour. Museum tours are free for Historic New England members and Woodstock residents. Adult admission is $8. Discounts for seniors and children are available.
