The Arsonist

Nicholas Benson will sign copies of his translation of The Arsonist by Aldo Palazzeschi on Sunday, April 7th @ 2:00 pm.

The volume is comprised of twenty-two dramatic, parodic narrative allegories of contemporary bourgeois life, which the poet depicts as timid, shallow, selfish, and squalid. This vision is rendered in colloquial free verse that places the reader, hypocrite lecteur, alongside the bourgeois poet become exemplary gadabout, boulevardier, and armchair provocateur--master of ceremonies at a carnival show.
Benson writes that “Palazzeschi was an equal-opportunity critic, and the poems of The Arsonist, dialogic and marked by multiple personae, are the works of a theater director whose stage lights reveal both the cracked old foundation and the flimsy new sets. With their irreverence, biting parody, and blithe nonsense, the poems make a mockery of organized social intention.”
