Job Description

• Reports, researches, writes and produces news stories for WNPR programs, national networks and a regional consortium of stations, including WFCR and WAMC. 

• Serves as lead reporter for the Capitol Region Reporting Initiative. The initiative places emphasis on stories from Hartford and the surrounding region, with special attention to how public policy affects residents. This requires extensive reporting on the state legislature and executive branch, as well as with non-profit service providers and cities and towns in the region.

* This full-time position is funded through a grant from a local philanthropic fund. Its sustainability is based on continued funding of this project, and will be evaluating on a yearly basis.

Job Responsibilities

·         Generates ideas and produces daily short-form and periodic long-form news coverage

·         Conducts interviews in the field, and at Capitol studios; produces and mixes stories using audio production equipment and digital editing programs

·         Writes and edits copy for newscasts and news features

·         Contributes production assistance to news/talk program Where We Live

·         Develops content for wnpr.org website

·         Distributes stories to regional consortium of public radio stations

·         Serves as regional reporter for National Public Radio (NPR) and other national service

·         Maintains part-time office at state capitol building

·         Develops contacts within the state capitol, town and city government and the nonprofit provider community

·         Serves as on-air fundraiser, and fill-in host as needed

·         Other duties as assigned

Job Skills/Qualifications

·         Three or more years of reporting experience, with public radio experience preferred; ability to match public radio announcing style

·         Strong ability to write and edit news copy to NPR guidelines

·         Ability to work with editors and producers in team environment

·         Proficiency in digital editing and audio production techniques

·         Knowledge of Connecticut and Hartford-area issues preferred

·         National reporting/production experience preferred

·         Ability to meet tight deadlines and perform under pressure of live broadcasting

·         Understanding of public radio “core values” – which inform WNPR’s programming choices
