The Mohegan Sun casino says its slot revenues plunged almost 10%in December, devastated by a free-play promotion at rival Foxwoods.

Mohegan Sun saw first quarter income fall more than 23%, down almost $17 million.  The biggest impact was to the casino’s slot revenues, which were down 9%.

The gaming industry in general in Connecticut is facing increased competition from new developments in Rhode Island and New York.  Mohegan Sun has been diversifying beyond the state’s borders to compensate, and says its seen an uptick in profits at its Pocono Downs development in Pennsylvania.
