A neighborhood watch group in New Haven that’s been patrolling its community carrying concealed weapons disarmed this past week.
Angry residents in the Edgewood Park neighborhood began armed patrols in June, following a spate of robberies, burglaries and shootings. They called for New Haven’s police chief to step down and demanded a return to community policing.with cops assigned to regular walking and bicycle beats.
Last week the city’s police chief announced his resignation and Patrol founder Eliezer Greer says officers are back out on the streets.
“We have a single officer on a bicycle four out of seven nights a week,†Greer explained, “and that is a step, and I say a step in the right direction."
During the time that the patrol carried weapons, there were no confrontations. The group will continue to walk the streets, unarmed.
