King Norris

Fred Norris -- Howard Stern's on-air sidekick, sound-bite guru, trivia master and King of Mars -- will bring the house down! With his band known as King Norris, Fred will sing, play guitar and basically SHRED like the rock legend he is. We're talking original Roots Rock.

Sounds like: Stevie Ray, Hendrix, ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin, Lenny Kravitz, and AC/DC-meets-Foghat. More rock than blues. An excellent energetic live show backed by his bombastic rhythm section featuring Rob "Mad Man" Boyd (bass) and Frank "Dog Bite" Fallon (drums).

Trio Globo Acoustic Fusion

Trio Globo has crafted a totally original voice in contemporary acoustic music with combustible spontaneity, rhythmic influences derived from six continents and diverse musical roots that span jazz, classical and sacred traditions. Eugene Friesen (Paul Winter Consort), Howard Levy (Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Paquito d'Rivera) and Glen Velez (Paul Winter Consort, Steve Reich) bring three unique musical visions together to create original work that is instantly recognizable as their own. For their Wesleyan program--Sounds from a Beautiful World--Trio Globo integrates musical beauty from the rhythms and melodies of the world. In the hands of these three original masters, seemingly disparate musical traditions are transformed into personal revelation and synthesized into unexpected marriages. Trio Globo creates a unique performance charged with virtuosity, rhythm, melody and wit.

Guido Garaycochea and Gray Park Art Exhibit

The Gallery at Lighthouse, Groton is proud to announce the opening of a show of paintings by local artists Gray Park and Guido Garaycochea. Gray is inspired by the changing scenery of Barn Island in Stonington and the surrounding marshes of Connecticut and Rhode Island. The majority of his paintings are done en plein air, where Gray strives to capture the essence of the changing relationship between land and sea. In Guido's paintings, he endeavors to express his own vision of reality. It is not a tangible reality, but one that evokes a particular magic in each human being, one in constant conflict.  His visual aesthetic proposition symbolizes the passing of time in an ethereal atmosphere. Forces constantly fight to meet their point of equilibrium to find the inner, always hidden, other face of the human being that is in a no-time reality.  He tries to create a universality of expression that allows perhaps for the present to meet the future. The Gallery at Lighthouse, Groton is located at 744 Long Hill Road, Groton Shopping Plaza, Groton, CT. 06340.  The Gallery is open Mon - Fri 12 - 5 pm and Sat 12 - 6 pm

CPAB HOLDS FIRST PUBLIC FORUM

Deep River, CT – October 14, 2008 – The Center for Public Awareness in Bioethics (CPAB), a new nonprofit initiative located in central Connecticut, will hold its first public forum with the screening of the film Under Our Skin, a documentary about Lyme Disease. This forum will take place on November 15, 2008, 1:00 p.m., at the Deep River Auditorium, 174 Main Street, Deep River, CT. After the film, CPAB will conduct an open discussion on bioethics and Lyme Disease. There is no charge, and donations will be accepted.

By screening Under Our Skin, CPAB seeks to engage the public to understand and discuss bioethical issues of the diagnosis and treatment of chronic Lyme Disease. The discussion following the film, moderated by Toastmasters of Niantic, CT, will include a panel of professionals who will answer questions and lead discussions.

Bioethics is the study of the ethical issues surrounding the development and application of science, medicine, and technology. CPAB’s mission is to increase public knowledge in bioethics by conducting discussion forums for open and responsible exchange of perspectives and opinions. CPAB hopes to motivate individuals and groups to address bioethical issues and human dignity.

From Open Eye Pictures, the Producers of Under Our Skin:

Under Our Skin is an expose about how our medical system is failing to address one of the most serious epidemics of our times. A dramatic tale of microbes, medicine, and money, this eye-opening film investigates the untold story of Lyme Disease, an emerging epidemic larger than AIDS. Each year thousands go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, told that their symptoms are "all in their head". Following the stories of patients and physicians as they battle for their lives and livelihoods, the film brings into focus a haunting picture of our healthcare system and its inability to cope with a silent terror under our skin.

CONNECTICUT COMMISSION ON CULTURE & TOURISM

PARTNERS WITH YOUNG AUDIENCES OF CONNECTICUT/VSA ARTS TO HOST

STATEWIDE FORUM ON CAREERS IN THE ARTS

FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

One-Day Event Includes Career Strategy Development

HARTFORD, Conn. (October 27, 2008) – The Connecticut Commission on Culture &

Tourism, in partnership with Young Audiences of Connecticut/VSA arts, will present a

one-day statewide forum on November 15, 2008, from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm, at the

Carol Autorino Center for the Arts and Humanities at Saint Joseph College in West

Hartford. The forum will bring together artists of all abilities, advocates, service

providers, organizations and state agencies to assess the opportunities and challenges

for artists with disabilities and develop strategies for their career advancement.

The goals of the forum are to promote dialogue and networking opportunities; share

information and resources from the community, state and national level; identify

opportunities, barriers, challenges and career needs of artists with disabilities; and

recommend strategies and next steps. Interwoven throughout the day will be

opportunities for participants to consider a series of essential questions.

“The state is committed to identifying and reducing barriers faced by people of all ages

with disabilities,” says Governor M. Jodi Rell. “We must help employers and employees

with disabilities find one another and reduce isolation wherever we can.”

“Connecticut has many talented citizens with disabilities,” says Karen Senich, Executive

Director of the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism. “This forum will

stimulate the beginning of a system of communication and network so that artists,

providers, agencies and organizations will support each other to advance careers for

artists with disabilities.”

The forum is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National

Arts and Disabilities Center (NADC) at the University of California in Los Angeles. Since

2001, the NEA and the NADC have awarded grants to state arts agencies to conduct

forums on careers in the arts for people with disabilities. The long-term goal is to

establish arts and disability networks and partnerships across the nation so that ongoing

programs and services can be provided for artists with disabilities.

Forum offerings will include keynote presentations by Paula Terry, Director of the Office

of AccessAbility at the National Endowment for the Arts, and Stephanie Moore, Director

of Visual Arts at VSA Arts in Washington, D.C. Breakout sessions will cover pragmatic

topics such as the business side of the arts; disability and employment related policies,

services and support from the community and the state; and transitioning from school

to career. Several accomplished and inspiring artists with disabilities will share their

successes and challenges: Aaron Kubey, actor and Executive Director of the National

Theatre of the Deaf; poet Ekiwah Adler-Belendez; guitarist John Denner; actress Ashley

Wolfe and scriptwriter Nancy Wolfe; and graphic artist Monique Silva. Kubey, Adler-

Belendez, and Denner will also perform. There will be an art exhibit and technology

Jacob Marley Tells His Story at Hole in the Wall

So you think you know the whole story of Ebenezer Scrooge and his late partner, Jacob Marley?  Then you haven’t seen Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol, playing November 14 through December 13 at Hole in the Wall Theater in New Britain.

In Tom Mula's funny, irreverent spin on the Christmas classic, Jacob Marley sets out to redeem Ebenezer Scrooge's soul and, in the process, save his own.  Accompanied by a jaunty Hell-sprite called a “Bogle,” Marley embarks on a journey filled with laughter, terror, the power of redemption, and the promise of second chances.  Four actors play multiple roles in this highly theatrical holiday entertainment.  Dennis Hull directs.

Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol runs Fridays and Saturdays, November 14 through December 13, at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays, November 23 and December 7, at 2:00 p.m. at Hole in the Wall Theater, 116 Main Street, New Britain.  Admission is a $20.00 suggested donation.  Seating is limited, so please call (860) 229-3049 for reservations.  For more information, visit www.hitw.org.
