Economists at UConn predict a bleak future for the state in their latest forecast.  The study says the state will lose 40,000 jobs in the next two years.

The forecast comes from the Center for Economic Analysis at UConn, and represents a considerable worsening of the outlook they issued in August – then the report said the state was looking a loss of less than ten thousand jobs.

But the implosion on Wall Street and the acceleration of the national economy into recession are bound to take their toll here in the Nutmeg state.  The researchers call the current economic malaise unprecedented.  The report notes that although figures now show the state’s economy began to contract nearly a year ago, so far the pain has been mild, with only modest job losses.  And they say, if Connecticut does manage to escape with only around 40,000 job losses, it will represent a remarkable outcome, a much milder downturn than the state has experienced during previous national recessions.

Two factors which may introduce uncertainty are the trends in energy prices and federal action on a stimulus package.
