Connecticut fingers will soon be dialing more numbers to make a local phone call. WNPR’s Diane Orson explains.
Here’s the first thing. Your phone number won’t change. But beginning on November 14th you’ll have to add a 203 or 860 area code to every phone call you make. Then, in December, the state will begin phasing-in two additional area codes in Connecticut - for new phone lines only. Phil Dukes, a spokesman for the Department of Public Utility Control, says there’s an explosion in demand for phone numbers.
"An average family of four, if they have 2 teenagers is likely to have four different cell phone numbers, a home line, a fax line, potentially a dial-up line for their internet service… whereas just 10, 15 years ago, it would have been one."
475 area codes may be assigned to new phone lines in the 203 region beginning in mid-December. 959 will go to numbers in the 860 region..at a future date.
