This weekend hikers in Connecticut will have the chance to walk a new stretch of trail that ends at the edge of Long Island Sound. The walk is part of National Trails Day, a series of events designed to inspire people to get outside to canoe, kayak or hike. Connecticut is holding more events than any other state.
The hike begins in North Guilford in an area known as the North Woods and heads south to the water’s edge. The more than sixteen miles skirts the east side of Guilford and goes through parts of Madison. Trail Manager Paul Mei says his favorite part is a place called Broomstick Ledges.
“Its very picturesque. It is rugged, but it’s beautiful. The forest is getting healthier and the wildlife getting stronger. That’s what I would always suggest people come to see “
The trail is part of the newly-designated New England National Scenic Trail. Before ending at Long Island Sound it winds through an historic district in Guilford, along a scenic highway. Paul Mei says it will be known as the Menunkatuck Trail, after the Native Americans who first lived in the area.
