State Judiciary Committee co-chair Mike Lawlor: Photo by Chion WolfState Representative Mike Lawlor predicts that a gay marriage bill will pass in Connecticut’s next legislative session.
Connecticut’s 2005 civil union law gave gays and lesbians the same legal rights as marriage. Two years ago, a bill that would have changed the name “civil union” to “marriage” passed the Joint Judiciary committee but never made it to the General Assembly.
Mike Lawlor, Judiciary Committee co-chair, says lawmakers needed more time to see how civil unions worked in the state.
"But legislators indicated then that they would probably support marriage equality in a few years. So I think next year is that opportunity. And my sense is you’ll see the same kind of bipartisan overwhelming support that we saw four years ago when we passed the civil unions bill."
At the time, Governor Rell said she would veto any same sex marriage bill in Connecticut. In a statement today, the governor said she disagrees with the State Supreme court ruling but will uphold it.
