Eliane Karp Toledo, the former First Lady of Peru, spoke on Monday at the Yale University Political Union.
Karp Toledo has helped to focus world attention on a collection of artifacts taken from the Incan site of Machu Picchu nearly a century ago by Yale explorer Hiram Bingham. In 2006 Peru threatened to sue to get them back.
Last year the university announced a tentative agreement to share the objects, but it was never finalized. In December, the government of Peru filed a federal lawsuit against the school, calling for the immediate return of the antiquities, which include ceramics, jewelry and human bones.
WNPR’s Diane Orson met with Eliane Karp Toledo on the Yale campus to talk about the lawsuit.
