Business leaders in Connecticut say it’s more important than ever that the state legislature promotes measures that will create jobs and protect the economy.
Connecticut’s House and Senate caught the Democratic wave sweeping the country in Tuesday’s election – the party now has veto proof majorities in both chambers, and can override Governor Rell on tax and spending issues. Joseph Brennan of the Connecticut Business and Industry Association says it’s vital that the new legislators remember what was the top issue on the minds of the voters.
"In Connecticut every candidate for the general assembly was talking about the economy as their top priority. Now it’s time they live up to those pledges. They really need to put a lot of partisan differences aside, and do the things that are necessary to increase business confidence in Connecticut as a good place to create jobs."
The CBIA is urging the legislature to rein in state spending in order to deal with the coming fiscal crisis, saying Connecticut needs to institute management changes and workforce reductions so that it can avoid tax increases. The association is also warning against reviving measures from last session such as changing sick pay mandates, and opening the state health care pool to small businesses.
